Zoom Introduces New Hayes ISDN Products.

Zoom Telephonics, Inc. (Nasdaq:ZOOM) has begun high-volume shipments of three new Hayes Accura brand ISDN products, including external RS-232 and USB models and an internal PCI model.

All three products plug into the most popular ISDN telephone interface, the basic rate S/T interface, which is used throughout Europe and in most other countries outside North America and Japan. This interface provides two 64 Kilobit per Second (Kbps) B channels and one D signaling channel. The two B channels can be bonded together using ML-PPP to give up to 128 Kbps throughput without data compression, and even higher speeds with data compression.

All three products allow someone to fax from a PC over one of the two ISDN channels. The fax can be received by any fax machine as if it was sent out of a fax machine connected to an analog phone line. Because an ISDN line provides two B channels, two communication functions can be performed simultaneously - for instance, a user can send or receive a fax on one channel while browsing the Web on the other channel.

All three products support the popular ISDN protocols, including Eurofile transfer.

The lowest-cost member of the new product line is the PCI model, which plugs into the PCI slot of a Windows 95, 98, 2000, or NT(4.0) personal computer. It supports both CAPI 2.0 and NDIS WAN miniport drivers to provide a high level of application software compatibility. In addition to providing data and fax capabilities, this product offers answering machine capabilities for computers with a soundcard.

The USB model plugs easily into the USB port of Windows 98 and 2000 computers and popular Macintosh computers. The USB model receives power from the USB port, so it does not need an external power supply.

The External model plugs into the serial or "RS-232" port of Windows 95, 98, 2000, and NT(4.0) computers. This is Hayes' most feature-packed ISDN terminal adapter. Telephones and fax machines can be used with ISDN service simply by plugging them into either of the two analog phone jacks on the back of this unit. Devices plugged into the phone ports benefit from advanced features including intercom, three-party conferencing, call forwarding, call waiting, call hold, call transfer, do-not-disturb, and call routing.
