Arts building has been closed since the late 1970's and was once home to lions, panthers and tigers. The Lion House is the largest structure on the historic Astor Court, the zoo's original assemblage of buildings and will soon be home once again to smaller animals like lemurs that are native to the endangered landscapes of Madagascar. This complex renovation project includes the expansion of the building below grade as well as the insertion of modern elements within the public gathering space. The sustainable design features that are integral to the design plan are emblematic of the Wildlife Conservation Society's mission.

"The Lion House renovation represents the Wildlife Conservation Society and New York City's commitment to the environment and the preservation of the dignified character of the original structure," explains Sylvia J. Smith, AIA AIA - Application Integration Architecture , principal of Fox & Fowle Architects. "Soon the public will benefit from viewing the animals in their natural environment within the Madagascar exhibit."

Projected date of completion for this project is 2006. In addition to the Lion House renovation, Fox & Fowle Architects has recently been awarded a second commission by the Wildlife Conservation Society to design the non-profits' new center at the Bronx Zoo.

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering was performed for the Lion House project by Kallen & Lemelson; structural engineering was performed by Anastos Engineering; site, civil and geotechnical services were performed by Langan Engineering. Hill International served as the contractor.
