Zippo Launches 1998 Collection

BRADFORD, Penn., March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- If variety truly is the spice of life, Zippo manufacturing Company's 1998 product line is Tabasco hot. The collection includes some of the most interesting and collectible designs of Zippo windproof lighters yet. And yes, it even includes Tabasco lighters.

From the Three Stooges to World Cup Soccer, the designs contained in the 1998 collection capture every nuance of life including music, art, film, food, fashion and sports. With 65 different lighter series available and nearly 200 new lighter designs, there is a lighter to correspond to virtually every lifestyle.

According to James Baldo, Zippo vice president of sales and marketing, the flagship of the 1998 collection is the Collectible of the Year which features a rendition of the famous Zippo Car. Zippo will limit production of the lighter to 250,000 worldwide.

"Zippo first started producing Collectible of the Year lighters in 1992. Each Collectible of the Year is sold internationally for only one year, before being discontinued," Baldo said. "The Zippo Car Collectible of the Year will be even more exclusive with a limited production of only 250,000 lighters."

Other hot picks in the 1998 line include the Harley-Davidson 95th anniversary collection, the 31-team NFL lighters, a new Zip Guard grip lighter, and a variety of lighters finished in Zippo's newest look -- rose gold.

Collecting Zippo Lighters

Linda Meabon, Zippo museum curator/archivist, said that the wide variety of lighters has resulted in a growing collector population that invests in new and old Zippo lighters. Many lighters in the 1998 collection have the potential to be very collectible, she added.

"Zippo has developed a new process of reverse etching where surface layers of the lighter are scraped away leaving a raised image that resembles an emblem." Meabon said. "These lighters will definitely become collectibles. They resemble vintage metallique lighters created in 1935 and are adorned with detailed emblems."

Meabon added that the 1998 collection introduces many new lighter designs which are considered "first issue" lighters among collectors.

"First issues of lighters attract collectors. They're the obvious pieces to have when building a collection," Meabon said. "Collectors also value licensed products which vary slightly from year to year and are produced for a very limited time, making them highly collectible."

The Zippo 1998 Collection is available at Zippo retailers worldwide. Zippo Manufacturing Company produces nearly 70,000 lighters each day and ships to more than 120 countries around the globe. Other products from Zippo's diverse line include pocket knives, key holders, money clips, writing instruments, tape measures, ZipLight pocket flashlights and the Fixxit pocket tool. Zippo employs nearly 1,200 people.
