), the Extreme Connectivity(c) Company, today announced a solution that will deliver cordless telephone A cordless telephone or portable telephone is a telephone with a wireless handset which communicates via radio waves with a base station connected to a fixed telephone line (POTS) and can only be operated near (typically within 100 meters or 328 ft from) its base station  and remote control capabilities to a line of Handspring Visor An electronic PDA originally from Handspring, Mountain View, CA (www.handspring.com) that was introduced in 1999 by the people who invented and marketed the PalmPilot. Based on the Palm OS, it was the first handheld to use the USB interface. (TM) handheld computers (Handhelds).

ZiLOG is working closely with Handspring to develop the Wave(TM) Communicator wireless platform that combines voice and data communication technology enabling Handheld-to-Handheld and Handheld-to-PC communication without wireless communication charges.

By simply plugging ZiLOG's Wave Communicator wireless module technology into a Visor handheld computer, users will be able to easily activate and manipulate "connectivity-enabled" appliances and electronics from virtually anywhere in their home or office. For example, with the Wave Communicator module in their Visor handheld, a user may turn on the coffee pot A coffee pot is a kitchen implement; a cooking pot in the kettle family. A coffee pot is also a container to hold freshly brewed coffee. There are many types and styles.  in the kitchen from their bedroom, turn on the CD player, dim the lights, and a myriad of other potential interactions. With the cordless phone A wireless telephone that transmits to and receives signals from a base station within a range of a few hundred feet. The Handspring relationship is the most recent in ZiLOG's Extreme Connectivity(c) strategy designed to connect anything to everything and anyone. ZiLOG intends to license this wireless platform using Wave technology and broaden its reach into the home and office automation marketplace.

The Wave Communicator platform enables companies to combine cordless phone, handheld and smart remote control capabilities. It provides remote synchronization (1) See synchronous and synchronous transmission.

Unlike solutions that provide cellular connectivity for a fee, Wave Communicator provides local connectivity between the handheld and a PC or another handheld in the same building or nearby location, without wireless communication charges. Since Wave Communicator uses the non-restricted cordless phone communications band, ZiLOG is able to deliver this capability for free.
