ZiLOG Design Guru Demonstrates Radio Controlled Car Laser Lap Counter on G4TechTV; Tune in Thursday June 24th at 4:00pm PST on your local Cable TV channel.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Question: What does a radio controlled car and a Palm PDA have in common?

According to Steve Pope, Senior Principal Design Engineer at ZiLOG, Inc. (NASDAQ:ZILG), the answer is simple - 'geekness.' And he can prove it! Pope appears live on G4Tech TV's 'Screen Savers' show this Thursday to explain and demonstrate how he put together an RC car laser lap counter with an IrDA Palm PDA interface using ZiLOG's award-winning Z8Encore!(R) Flash microcontroller.

"The laser lap counter project uses some very cool control electronics," said Pope. "The unit we designed has two RF systems - the Maxstream 900Mhz and the 49Mhz RC car radio. We will be using the Maxstream radio to send the car lap times to a ZiLOG MDS GP board that has a large LCD display to show how each driver is doing."

"The two channel system includes two lasers, two photo transistors, one inch round tubing (to mount the lasers) and a microcontroller system to tie it all together. The main control board for this system is a ZiLOG MDS-GP Board with a ZiLOG F642 Encore! CPU module. One cool feature of the ZiLOG development kits is the addition of a IRDA transceiver. This project also includes a Palm OS application that is used to set-up the track and save lap times."

Other features that Pope incorporated into the RC lap counter system was a way to add MP3 'voice' prompts, color LCD and a RF link to upload the race data.
