Zhone Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:ZHNE), the first company dedicated to building total-delivery solutions for voice, data and video content services worldwide, today announced general availability of its new 'Access Optimizer' technology with the introduction of its new T1/E1 ATM IMA (Interactive Multimedia Association, Annapolis, MD) An earlier trade association founded in 1988 originally as the Interactive Video Industry Association. It provided an open process for adopting existing technologies and was involved in subjects such as networked services, scripting  line card and T1/E1 Circuit Emulation line cards. These cards allow carriers to uplink both narrowband and broadband traffic from any leading DLC (1) (Data Link Control) See data link and OSI.

, NGDLC NGDLC Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier  or DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL.  thereby enabling the broadest array of available network topologies in the industry.

By subtending chassis, the Access Optimizer allows equipment to be placed closer to the subscriber to address both bandwidth and reach. This subtending capability also allows for more cost-effective network builds by deploying just the right port count that a market requires. In combination with a broad range of port densities, chassis sizes and both locally-powered and line-powered configurations, Zhone is enabling operators to deploy the most cost-effective multi-service infrastructure networks available.

The new 'Access Optimizer' is valuable not only for subtending Zhone chassis, but also for subtending traffic from other vendors NGDLCs and DSLAMs. By utilizing Access Optimizer technology, carriers are able to "cap-and-grow" their investment in legacy platforms without service disruption. New service ports can be deployed in the MALC MALC Multiple Access Line Concentrator (Zhone Technologies)

rather than in the legacy platform, providing for more cost effective port deployments and for more services than are available on the legacy devices.

"Zhone's new Access Optimizer allows carriers to cap investment in legacy NGDLCs thereby providing a migration path to packet based service delivery," said Eric Presworsky, product manager for Zhone. "As a result, carriers are able to upgrade their networks to newer packet based solutions while retaining their investment in pre-existing DLC, NGDLC and DSLAM platforms. Zhone's T1 ATM and Circuit Emulation line circuits provide cost-effective network deployment options offering bandwidth flexibility and a common management system."

Both the new twelve port circuit emulation line card and the new thirty-two port ATM line card support T1 for North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere.  and E1 for most international markets. The inverse multiplexing multiplexing, in communication, technique whereby two or more independent messages, or information-bearing signals, are carried by a single common medium, or channel.  capability on the ATM IMA card allows carriers to bond up to thirty two of these links to provide the precise amount of bandwidth to the subtended chassis as market conditions require. The new T1/E1 Circuit Emulation line card is also valuable for delivering private-line legacy T1 and E1 services to subscribers.

As the industry's first next-generation, high-density multi-access line concentrator, the MALC has been specifically designed to support both traditional narrowband voice and broadband data services in a single platform, delivering any service to any subscriber over a single common infrastructure. The MALC allows carriers to deploy using today's leading TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) A technology that transmits multiple signals simultaneously over a single transmission path. Each lower-speed signal is time sliced into one high-speed transmission.  circuit technology today and migrate to cell or IP packet without any incremental hardware.

The new Access Optimizer capability expands the flexibility of the MALC product family with an even broader range of configuration options while maintaining common management, integrated cross-connect, integrated loop qualification with internal splitters, and flow-through provisioning capabilities to clearly differentiate the platform from traditional NGDLC platforms. Also embedded in the Access Optimizer platform are support for Subscriber Management and IP Termination capabilities to enhance service provisioning and further facilitate the migration to packet networks.
