Zenographics Introduces Zx: Breakthrough High-Performance Continuous-Tone Rendering Software for All Printers and Copiers; Zx-Powered Print Engines Will Conquer 'Performance Gap'.

IRVINE, Calif. -- Zenographics announces today its revolutionary patent-pending Zx(TM) rendering software, designed to solve fundamental imaging industry performance problems. Over four times faster on average than Zenographics' current industry-leading Zj raster technology, Zx renders virtually all office documents at engine-speed on even the world's fastest print engines.

"Today's printers and copiers frequently do not print real-world office documents at engine speed," stated Bob Romney, president of Zenographics. "We call this gap between actual print speed and rated engine speed the 'performance gap.' Now that Zx eliminates this performance gap, we expect that consumers will change their behavior: instead of accepting slow printing as 'normal,' they will demand printers that actually perform to their advertised specifications."

Print-to-file benchmarks using all Quality Logic PageSense 4 multi-page test files show that on a 3.2GHz PC, Zx averaged 278 virtual pages per minute (VPPM) in color. On a low-end 700MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  Pentium III The successor to the Pentium II from Intel. Introduced in the spring of 1999 at 500 MHz, the Pentium III architecture was similar to the Pentium II with the addition of 70 new instructions optimized for multimedia (see SSE).  PC, Zx averaged 77 VPPM in color. This means that Zx can deliver engine-speed printing for all printers and copiers, in both full color and monochrome.

"With Moore's law "The number of transistors and resistors on a chip doubles every 18 months." By Intel co-founder Gordon Moore regarding the pace of semiconductor technology. He made this famous comment in 1965 when there were approximately 60 devices on a chip.  increasing client-side PC power faster than increases in print engine speed, Zx ushers in a new era, long overdue: low-cost, high-quality full-speed printing," said Romney. "Zx is a genuine breakthrough; it is by far our best work yet."

Zx's remarkable performance headroom means that OEMs can add sophisticated object-based continuous-tone print quality optimizations and still get engine-speed printing. Print engines requiring halftoning convert the Zx continuous-tone datastream on-the-fly in firmware and/or hardware.

Because raster-based architectures are less expensive, raster currently dominates ink-jet and low-end laser sales. OEMs have been traditionally unwilling to extend low-cost raster into higher speed segments because of PostScript/PCL compatibility concerns. Fortunately, with Zx, OEMs do not have to choose between low-cost raster and expensive legacy PostScript/PCL: Zx can be easily added to PostScript/PCL controllers. The ZxStream interpreter, orders of magnitude less complex than PostScript or PCL (Printer Command Language) The page description language for HP LaserJet printers. It has become a de facto standard used in many printers and typesetters. PCL Level 5, introduced with the LaserJet III in 1990, also supports Compugraphic's Intellifont scalable fonts. , is a mere 500 lines of 'C' code. Standard PDL See page description language.

emulation switching can be used to dynamically switch to Zx as needed as needed prn. See prn order. . These combined Zx + PostScript/PCL solutions provide the breakthrough performance of Zx and the compatibility of PostScript/PCL, at no incremental hardware cost for Zx.

Zx can be implemented together with Zenographics' SuperPrint for a complete printing solution for Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh clients, or be deployed as a rendering plug-in to other driver architectures, whether OEM-specific or Unidriver-based.

The first Zx-based printer will appear in the first half of 2005.

For early adopter OEMs who sign license agreements in 2005, Zenographics is offering Zx at an introductory royalty rate as low as 0.25 percent of device SRP SRP - A data link layer protocol. , when added to a PCL/PostScript-based printer or copier.

For evaluation purposes, Zenographics will provide qualified OEMs with no-cost engineering services to add the Zx interpreter to a print engine development platform of their choice. This task can be accomplished in as little as one man-week.

Interested OEMs can see and test Zx by downloading the ZxViewer print simulation application, as well as by viewing additional information at http://zx.zeno.com. For further information, contact Lane Freestone free·stone
