This tragic love story, set in the Cherokee Trail The Cherokee Trail, sometimes called the "Trappers' Trail," was a historic trail through the present-day U.S. states of Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and Wyoming that was used from the late 1840s up through the early 1860s.  of Tears community, stars two real men, Zeke and Ned, Cherokee Civil War veterans, community leaders and close friends. Ned, a sharpshooter, marries Jewel, Zeke's daughter. Shortly thereafter, Zeke murders a woman he did not mean to kill. There follows mayhem with various ruffians seeking to get even, and finally a courtroom massacre. A series of posses from the "white Law" are then sent after Zeke, Ned and many other Cherokees believed to have been involved in the courtroom massacre. Over the next few years, Zeke finds a way to make his peace with the white Law, eventually raising a Cherokee militia and thereby earning a pardon from President Grant. Ned chooses a solitary route.
