ZebraNet(R) PrintServer II to Provide Easy Enterprise-Wide

Printer Management

Zebra Technologies Zebra Technologies (NASDAQ: ZBRA) is a manufacturer of thermal bar code label and receipt printers, RFID smart label printer/encoders, and card printers, based in Vernon Hills, Illinois. Zebra has products in 100 countries around the world.  Corp. (Nasdaq:ZBRA), a worldwide leader in industrial bar code label printers, and Extended Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:XTND XTND Extend

), a leading provider of quality network connectivity products, today announced the co-development of the ZebraNet(R) PrintServer II, the first bar code printer connectivity tool that enables IT professionals to manage Zebra on-demand bar code label printers just as they would any other network printer.

Powered by the printer, the ZebraNet PrintServer II unit enables IT managers to monitor the network configuration of a Zebra printer from anywhere in the enterprise using familiar software tools such as Hewlett Packard (HP) JetAdmin(tm), HP Web JetAdmin(tm) or a standard Web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you. . "The partnership with Zebra provides significant advantages to IT managers who have researched bar code system integration, but are searching for an easier way to implement and manage the system as a whole," said Extended Systems print server business unit manager Mike Evans. "The ZebraNet PrintServer II print server enables users to reap the benefits of bar coding -- improved data integrity, increased productivity and advanced product-tracking capabilities -- without learning new skills, developing specialized software or purchasing additional network hardware."

ZebraNet II enables IT managers to instantly connect Zebra industrial bar code printers, including Zebra's Performance Line(tm), Stripe(R) Series and Z Series(tm) printers, to any Ethernet network, including Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. (R)-, Unix(R)-, Novell(R)- and TCP-IP-based protocols. Using familiar network administration tools, a Web browser or Zebra's own ZebraNet print server management software, IT managers can receive live feedback about the current status of all Zebra and non-Zebra (Ethernet-ready) printers in one convenient application.

For example, using ZebraNet PrintServer II with HP JetAdmin, the most widely used network peripheral management utility, IT managers can receive timely notification about Zebra printer error conditions, such as paper out, printer off-line or other printer errors. When using Zebra's own ZebraNet utilities, such notifications are delivered instantly. JetAdmin and ZebraNet View utilities also enable users to perform diagnostics and resolve network-correctable errors, such as improper configuration, anywhere on the network and directly through the application.

ZebraNet PrintServer II is a factory-installed module that ships as an internal component for Zebra's Performance Line printers, and as an external component for Zebra's other printers. The module is available through Zebra's Authorized Service Professionals.

"As bar coding operations expand and become a more integrated part of the corporate enterprise, network managers are demanding one easy way to manage all of their network peripherals, including bar code printers," said Zebra product manager Jeff Kaufman. "We are excited to be working with Extended Systems, a recognized leader in network connectivity, to provide our customers with the highest level of network compatibility and control available."
