Debit Spread Debit spread

Applies to derivative products. Difference in the value of two options, when the value of the option bought exceeds the value of the one sold. One buys a "debit spread." Antithesis of a credit spread.
to Buy -- Buy Corinthian Colleges (Nasdaq: COCO) Jan 2009 12.5 Call and sell COCO Jan 2009 17.5 Call. The spread price at Friday (11/10) close was $1.80.

The maximum profit potential with this position is 155%. Maximum profits will be realized if the stock is above $17.50 during the week prior to January 2009 options expiration. The stock would have to rise to over $30.00 to obtain a similar profit from buying the stock itself.

A debit spread is similar to buying an option, except you are using the simultaneous sale of another option to offset some of the cost. This debit spread reduces the cost of buying the COCO Jan 2009 12.5 Call, which otherwise would cost 2.9 points.

Corinthian Colleges is a for-profit, post-secondary education company. The stock recently underwent a sharp sell-off, then rebounded quickly, which is bullish Bullish
