The company offers a diversified portfolio of health insurance products and related services to employer groups, government-sponsored plans, and individuals. In its Medicare Advantage business, revenue increased 41% to more than $1 billion, which amounts to about one-third of the company's gross revenue. While total government medical membership was up only 10%, Medicare Advantage membership grew almost 30%, to roughly 475,000 members. This is making its way to the bottomline, as Humana reported pre-tax earnings from its government section of $104 million, a 22% increase year-over-year. Pre-tax earnings from Humana's commercial segment, however, decreased 32%, to $25 million in the second quarter of 2004. Nevertheless, the company is confident and reaffirmed its 2005 earnings guidance of $2.23 to $2.25 per share, and anticipates 2006 profit growth of at least 25%. That said, Humana must make this transition to the Medicare market work or they will miss estimates and be punished by the Street. Stocks from the Consensus Buy List include: Nucor Corp.
