Here are the highlights from the Experts Watch column:

Investors are becoming much more acquainted with the factors that stand in the way of the market's advance. The litany litany (lĭt`ənē) [Gr.,=prayer], solemn prayer characterized by varying petitions with set responses. The term is mainly used for Christian forms. Remember, historically high growth rates don't always mean a high rate of growth looking into the future.
insufficient to justify valuation expansion. At times, the negative sentiment arising from consciousness of these events can be a contrarian positive indicator for the indices. Some of the Experts fear a breakdown that could trigger a slide to much lower levels.

Kelley Wright, editor of Investment Quality Trends, notes that the current correction is, in large part, due to expectations for rising interest rates and inflation. As the economy has grown, the Fed has elected to stand pat on interest rates, although it has recently signaled its readiness to begin raising them at a measured pace. The market moves ahead of the Fed, though, and evidence of growing inflation combined with a strengthening economy have compelled the bond market to sell off, driving prices of bonds down and yields/interest rates higher.

Wright, being the contrarian deep value investor that he is, thinks stocks like Associated Banc-Corp (NASDAQ:ASBC) will represent solid values when the selling abates. The company owns 217 branches in Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The close of the most recent quarter saw earnings per diluted di·lute

He expects that short-term earnings during this transitional period may give investors additional opportunity to acquire shares at Undervalue.

For Gregory Spear, editor of the Spear Report, the key level in oil is $42/barrel. A sustained move above $42 would cause serious global damage. Spear quotes the International Energy Agency, demand for oil is up 2 million barrels on a year over year basis, whereas production is down 440,000 over the same period. Further, China is now importing 1 million barrels of oil a day.

Spear profiled a company he thinks is about to break out to new all time highs. Coventry Health Care (NYSE:CVH) is a diversified HMO HMO health maintenance organization.

Earnings were up 50% on a year over year basis, against a solid quarter. In January of 2003, the company had grown earnings 74% on a year over year basis. The company also increased revenue guidance by 10%, and Spear thinks the company is a solid defensive pick in spite of some of the legislative risks.
