Here are the highlights from the Featured Expert column:

According to Bank Credit Analyst, an excellent Canadian forecasting outfit, China could be the next financial mania. The BCA service cites the "electrifying" rise in Chinese stocks and notes that history has demonstrated that mania forces develop in waves. "They tend to drive asset prices to a series of climactic highs before a dramatic and painful shakeout." It warns: "The pattern of the recent China mania is eerily similar to the spectacular run up in Chinese stocks in 1992-94 and 1996-97."

Vivian Lewis' own preference is for Argentina and India.

Taking Stock...

Sanofi (NYSE:SNY) made an unfriendly offer to take control of Aventis (NYSE:AVE), the Franco-German drug group, and its shares are suffering as a result. Apart from normal arbs, SNY is on the bear hit list because of the termination of its key shareholder agreements with Total and L'Oreal by the end of the year, and fears that its blockbuster Plavix will run into patent challenges.

Spirent Communications (NYSE:SPM) made a strong push for the lead in its core mobility test equipment market with a new product and a new partner. SPM introduced the first carrier-scale CDMA2000 performance benchmarking tool, co-developed with Scientific Software Engineering, provider of software telecommunications products for more than 20 years. The new CDMA2000 Performance Test System builds upon existing test tools for GPRS, WCDMA and WLAN. The new partnership will yield several future wireless core infrastructure test applications.

Taro's (NASDAQ:TARO) U.S. affiliate had expanded its distribution capacity by buying a distribution center in South Brunswick (NJ) for $18 million, for which it will receive financial incentives from the State. It also has research, production, and distribution activities in Israel, Canada, and Ireland.

Teva (NASDAQ:TEVA) was rated "outperform" by William Blair and Lewis' Tel Aviv gossips say that it will exceed its own estimates this quarter. It won FDA okay for 2 new generic oral contraceptives from its deal with Andrx. These have sales of $713 million and $137 million/year respectively.
