Briar Patch Stock Market Daily Update from March 1

The afternoon rally got here a little early and was over an hour before the close, giving way to a sideways to down drift for the last hour. At the moment, Tim Murray is going to call Monday's rally a first of the month thing; the assumption is that it will fizzle out shortly. That might be, but since the Dow and S&P-500 are right up against their February highs, Murray would be careful the next few days because these could breakout to new highs.

Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) was an interesting situation Monday. Before the opening, the brokerage firm J.P. Morgan downgraded the stock from buy to neutral because channel check have suggested that bookings have been soft, particularly in the chips for notebooks. Instead of knocking the stock for a loop, it was down about $.40 and rallied back; by early afternoon, it broke up for a little rally. Keep an eye on it this week.

Murray had across the board gains in his long positions with no news from any of the companies. Energy Partners (NYSE:EPL) traded very well and is bouncing against the mid-February high; it is important to see it get over $14.25. Art Technology Group (NASDAQ:ARTG) shattered its down-drift on good volume; getting above $1.65 would greatly improve the chart.
