Just Another Merger Monday (March 29, 2004)

We looked at our screen this morning to observe the chemical sector suddenly taking off like a rocket. The igniting factor was a merger announcement by two chemical companies, Millennium (MCH) and Lyondell (LYO). Biotechnology was not far behind, with industry leader Amgen (AMGN) announcing a takeover of Tularik (TLRK). These two transactions brought some excitement to an otherwise dull market day. The indexes were up but volume was quite low as traders await AWAIT, crim. law. Seems to signify what is now understood by lying in wait, or way-laying.  critical employment stats due out this Friday.

Meanwhile, in our portfolios we have been held back by chemicals of a different kind, namely oil. Our oil service positions have slipped but seem to have found support around the current level, so we're going to give them a little more time.  production cuts that had been planned to take effect April 1. This would tend to cause lower oil prices, and energy related equity prices appear to be discounting the news. OPEC president and Indonesian oil minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro told reporters that OPEC wanted "to assure the world market that we are going to supply the market." No one is quite sure what this means so we'll just have to wait until Wednesday to find out.
