stocks during the market declines of the last few years, Zacks told investors which stocks to sell or avoid.

Here is a synopsis of why ALVR and ATVI have a Zacks Rank of 5 (Strong Sell) and should most likely be sold or avoided for the next one to three months. Note that a #5 Strong Sell rating is applied to 5% of all the Zacks ranked stocks:

Alvarion, Ltd. (Nasdaq:ALVR) reported a fourth-quarter loss of six cents last week. The loss was a penny wider than analysts had projected and represented the second earnings miss in as many quarters. Following the report, two of the four covering analysts cut their forecasts for 2006. The new consensus estimate calls for a one-cent profit this year, versus the previous forecast for a profit of four cents.

Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq:ATVI) generated profits of 23 cents per share Cents per share

in its fiscal third quarter, 13 cents less than analysts had been expecting. The company blamed market conditions and the transition to the next generation of gaming systems for the disappointing results. ATVI anticipates that the weak market conditions will continue into its fiscal fourth quarter and, as a result, lowered its guidance for fiscal 2006 profits to 9-11 cents per share. Following the release of the new guidance, 14 of the 16 covering analysts revised their forecasts, resulting in a 23-cent drop in the consensus estimate to 10 cents per share.

Here is a synopsis of why NILE and PYX have a Zacks Rank of 4 (Sell) and should also most likely be sold or avoided for the next one to three months. Note that a #4 Sell rating is applied to 15% of all the stocks ranked by Zacks:

Blue Nile, Inc. (Nasdaq:NILE) missed fourth-quarter estimates by four cents. The company said that its 29-cent per share profit was affected by a significant increase in online marketing costs. Looking forward, NILE projects earning between 62-72 cents per share in 2006. Three of the four covering analysts responded to the guidance by downwardly revising their forecasts. The new consensus estimate calls for a profit of 70 cents this year versus the previous forecast for profits of 99 cents per share.

Playtex Products, Inc. (NYSE:PYX) recently reported breakeven breakeven

The results were below the consensus forecast for a profit of two cents per share and marked the second miss in the past five quarters.  profits from sales growth to be partially offset by higher costs and expenses. As result, analysts reduced their forecasts for 2006. The new consensus estimate for 2006 profits of 47 cents per share is seven cents below the prior forecast of 54 cents per share.
