Whiting Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:WLL) has missed analysts' expectations for five consecutive quarters. Most recently, the company reported fourth-quarter earnings of $1.05 per share, 16 cents less than analysts had projected. Following the release of the results, all four of the covering analysts cut their forecasts for 2006 profits. The new consensus estimate of $3.51 per share is a $1.13 below the estimate of just one month ago.

Here is a synopsis of why HOMS and WIND have a Zacks Rank of 4 (Sell) and should also most likely be sold or avoided for the next one to three months. Note that a #4 Sell rating is applied to 15% of all the stocks ranked by Zacks:

Homestore, Inc. (Nasdaq:HOMS) said last week that its fourth-quarter loss totaled three cents per share; analysts were expecting a one-cent per share profit. Following the report, one of the four covering analysts cut his forecast for 2006 profits. The new consensus estimate predicts a 2006 profit of 12 cents per share, two cents below the forecast of a month ago.

Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND) generated a 11-cent per share profit in its fiscal fourth quarter. The result was a penny less than analysts were expecting. The company also guided for 2007 non-GAAP profits of 38-43 cents per share. In response to the guidance, both covering analysts revised their forecasts. The new consensus estimate calls for a profit of 40 cents per share, eight cents below the forecast of a month ago.
