(NYSE:FDX), and the U.S. Postal Service The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) processes and delivers mail to individuals and businesses within the United States. The service seeks to improve its performance through the development of efficient mail-handling systems and operates its own planning and engineering programs. announced a new agreement for domestic air transport of mail through 2013 that replaces a previous contract entered into in 2001. Under the agreement, expected to generate about $8 billion in revenue over the life of the contract, FedEx will continue to fly over 4 million pounds of U.S. mail every business day. The stock is down $1.85, or 1.8%, to $102.86 in morning trading. We continue our Hold recommendation on FDX. Smith & Nephew Confesses Yesterday, Smith & Nephew (NYSE:SNN) indicated that it may have been one of its independent representative's emails that triggered the Department of Justice investigation into possible orthopedic industry anti-trust activities. The company conducted an internal investigation after receiving the DOJ (Department Of Justice) The legal arm of the U.S. government that represents the public interest of the United States. It is headed by the Attorney General. subpoena subpoena (səpē`nə) [Lat.,=under penalty], in law, an order to a witness to appear before a court. A subpoena ad testificandum [Lat. and discovered that the representative sent an email in October 2005 to competitors. The email suggested the competitors coordinate their contract proposals with a hospital. The email was not acted upon, and upon its internal findings, SNN severed its business relationship with the representative. Assuming this is the only event that triggered the June 2006 DOJ investigation, the SNN revelation could resolve the matter quickly. Importantly, the news removes an overhang over other orthopedic company stocks, including Stryker (NYSE:SYK) and Zimmer (NYSE:ZMH).
