ZZYZX Adds to Its Raid Storage Line With Powerful New Enterprise Class Fibre Channel Raid Array.

Business Editors

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 18, 2000

Zzyzx Peripherals Inc. today extended its industry leading Fibre Channel storage product offering by announcing the immediate availability of the RocketSTOR 2000.

The RocketSTOR 2000 is a powerful new enterprise class RAID array designed for mission critical data center environments requiring leading-edge Fibre Channel connectivity, performance, capacity and scalability. This Fibre Channel RAID product is a key component to Zzyzx' highly scalable storage area network (SAN) solutions, featuring centrally managed high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  data clusters, data sharing The ability to share the same data resource with multiple applications or users. It implies that the data are stored in one or more servers in the network and that there is some software locking mechanism that prevents the same set of data from being changed by two people at the same time. , LAN-free back-up, and in the future, server-less back-up.

Innovative, High Performance, Scalable RAID Solutions

The RocketSTOR 2000 maximizes the full potential of the high-speed Fibre Channel storage interface and truly satisfies the needs of high bandwidth and I/O intensive Refers to an application that reads and/or writes a large amount of data. The performance of such an application depends on the speed of the computer's peripheral devices and can cause a computer to become I/O bound. See I/O bound.  computing applications requiring terabytes of storage. These high availability systems provide the performance and uptime required by business-critical applications such as online transaction processing See transaction processing and OLCP. , data warehousing See data warehouse.

The RocketSTOR 2000 features hot swap To pull out a component from a system and plug in a new one while the main power is still on. Also called "hot plug" and "hot insertion," hot swap is a feature of USB devices, allowing an external drive, network adapter or other peripheral to be plugged in without having to power down the , active/active, dual redundant RAID controllers with two 100 MB/sec Fibre Channel host interfaces, eight Ultra2 SCSI LVD See LVDS.

The RocketSTOR 2000 RAID controllers are based upon Zzyzx' new RS-62 core RAID controller architecture that features a high performance StrongARM SA-110 RISC processor, an advanced set of caching algorithms, along with internal 32-bit and 64 bit PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

busses. This design will scale to future 200 MB/sec Fibre Channel, Ultra3 SCSI and 160M interfaces. The RocketSTOR 2000's high-end hardware architecture combined with an advanced multi-tasking controller operating system provides a best-in-class performance and scales to provide 5.6 TB of total storage capacity.

Mission Critical Data Availability and Fault Tolerance

The RocketSTOR 2000 is designed to provide exceptional performance and scalability for 7 x 24 mission critical applications offering extreme fault tolerance with no single point of failure. All field-replaceable units are redundant and hot swappable, including the RAID controllers, disk drives, power supplies and cooling fans. The RocketSTOR 2000 offers the standard features found in all of Zzyzx' high availability data systems with support for RAID levels 0, 1, 0+1, 3 and 5 as well as mirrored cache, host transparent automatic fail-over, global hot spares with automatic disk drive rebuilds, and redundant power cords.

Each controller also offers full resiliency with redundant independent fail-over busses, and separate power domains. Fault tolerance is also featured with SAF-TE SAF-TE SCSI Access Fault-Tolerant Enclosure  for monitoring and communication of the status of enclosure power supplies, cooling fans and temperature as well as SMART ability performing near-term failure prediction of disk drives.

New Advanced Features

The RocketSTOR 2000 boasts a number of new, advanced features that offer users more flexibility, ease of use, and up-time. The RocketSTOR 2000 features an intuitive, easy to use JAVA graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

Computer display format that allows the user to select commands, call up files, start programs, and do other routine tasks by using a mouse to point to pictorial symbols (icons) or lists of menu choices on the screen as opposed to having to

The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface. ). The GUI is designed for RAID controller and RAID set-up and configuration; monitoring the operational status of the RAID controllers and disk drives; monitoring the enclosure cooling fans, power supplies and temperature; and offering system problem diagnosis and corrective action. The RocketSTOR 2000 also features a new Task Manager for controlling and/or monitoring all controller tasks, and an AutoReconfiguration tool that allows for on-line RAID level migration and on-line disk expansion. A new online create feature totally eliminates create time for new RAID sets, while allowing their immediate use. The system's new non-disruptive firmware feature allows for redundant controller configurations to eliminate the interruption normally associated with updating firmware.

Availability and Support

The RocketSTOR 2000 is currently available directly through Zzyzx. These rack mount systems can be configured from 81 GB to 5.6 TB utilizing 9 GB, 18 GB, 36 GB, and 50 GB in both 7,200 and 10,000 RPM. Future support for 72 GB and 15,000 RPM disk drives will be offered. Contact Zzyzx for a free technical consultation and for pricing on a custom built-to-order storage solution. Customers can also check out product specifications at www.zzyzx.com.

The RocketSTOR 2000 is backed by Zzyzx award winning technical support with a three year return to manufacture warranty on the controllers and enclosure, and five years on the disk drives. Lifetime toll free 7x24x1 technical support is provided standard with each system. Optional on-site installation, training and support are also available.
