SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Zubis got a rare chance to play her favorite position and took advantage by scoring the only goal in the Cougars' 1-0 victory over El Camino in the opening round of the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Zubis tied for the team lead in scoring last year but was switched to a more defensive role this season. Tuesday's goal was only her third of the season.

``I've been playing a lot of different positions this year,'' Zubis said. ``I haven't got to play up front very much. I like playing there the best.''

Despite entering the match with two of the state's top eight scorers and 89 total goals, the Cougars (20-1-2) needed all the offensive help they could get against the 14th-seeded South Coast League runnerup. COC took 21 shots but was consistently denied by the solid play of El Camino goalkeeper Angela Pellegrino.

Pellegrino made 10 saves, including a diving A DIV Associate of Divinity  stop of a penalty shot by Kristine Marbach in the 65th minute.

Zubis provided the lone goal by charging in to score from a few feet out on a cross by Nicole Modugno.

The lack of offense put more pressure than usual on Cougars goalkeeper Dina Garcia, who finished with 10 saves, including a leaping grab in the 18th minute in which she narrowly avoided stepping over the goal line.

The Warriors (13-8-1) kept Garcia busy with a steady dose of shots early in the game. They got the ball past Garcia on a corner kick in the 10th minute, but the goal was called back because of a penalty. El Camino's other corner kicks within the next few minutes resulted in shots over the crossbar.

The Warriors' low seed did not deceive TO DECEIVE. To induce another either by words or actions, to take that for true which is not so. Wolff, Inst. Nat. Sec. 356.  COC since El Camino plays in the same conference as defending state champion Long Beach.

``That's playoff soccer right there,'' Marcellin said. ``We thought it would be this kind of a game.''
