ZOE'S GUCCI COUP; BRITISH SOAP AWARDS 2004.. AND THE BIGGEST GONGS ON TV ARE BEING DISHED OUT EastEnder Michelle's stunning frock makes her belle of soap ball.

Byline: JAMES DESBOROUGH

EASTENDERS babe Michelle Ryan won the fashion gong at last night's British Soap Awards - in a plunging Gucci frock.

The anorak and jeans Michelle normally wears as Albert Square's market girl Zoe Slater were a million miles away as she arrived for the glittering ceremony.

Fans all agreed the 20-year-old star - nominated in the Sexiest Female category - was the belle of the ball in the three-quarter length black designer dress the actress snapped up in New York for pounds 1,500.

Michelle, accompanied by her soccer player boyfriend Tommy Williams, told The People: "I'd never been brave enough to wear it since I bought it six months ago but I decided tonight was the night!

"It's sexy but classy which is why it appealed to me. This is definitely the sexiest dress I've ever worn to an awards show!"

Crowds of fans had queued for up to eight hours for the soap "Oscars" at the BBC TV Centre in London's White City, London. And they weren't disappointed

Other Walford eye candy included KIM MEDCALF (Sam Mitchell) - pictured below right- who wore a pounds 3,000 black Jacques Asagouri dress.

And CHARLIE BROOKS - up for best villain as Janine Butcher - donned a pounds 1,100 black Kyri plunging dress.

Rival Corrie actresses were also dressed to kill.

SURANNE JONES (Karen McDonald) and LUCY JO HUDSON (Katy Nelson) were both in revealing Vivienne Westwood dresses.

Both NIKKI SANDERSON and TINA O'BRIEN - Candice and Sarah Louise - dazzled in tailor made outfits from Liverpudlain designer Jason Ansell.

SAMIA GHADIE (Maria Sutherland) sported a Kyri dress, while returning star JANE DANSON (Leanne Battersby) donned a gown by Lisa Jayne Dunn.

The girls from Emmerdale also showed why viewers have switched on to the show in their millions over the last 12 months - including SAMMY WINWARD, AMY NUTTALL, LUCY PARGETER and Dales newcomer PATSY KENSIT.

Hollyoaks babes SARAH BAXENDALE, SARAH JAYNE DUNN and CHRISTINA BAILY all sported dresses by Liverpudlian designer Jason Ansell dresses. Co-star ALI BASTIAN sported a Pinko dress.

While the girls stole the flashlights, many of soap's leading men also won wolf whistles from the fans.

They included EastEnders SHANE RICHIE and MICHAEL HIGGS and Corrie stars RYAN THOMAS and KEITH DUFFY - all up for the Sexiest Male gong.

Hunky NIGEL HARMAN, who plays Walford bad boy Dennis Rickman, also proved a crowd pleaser.

Host PAUL O'GRADY mingled with the stars before the big show began. But he kept them guessing till the actual ceremony.

He announced 17 gongs , six of which were voted for by viewers and 11 by an expert panel.

Hotly contested categories included Best Male - a battle between Nigel Harman, Corrie newcomer BILL WARD (Charlie Stubbs) and JEFF HORDLEY, Emmerdale's Cain Dingle.

Sexiest Female was also too close to call - with Michelle Ryan up against Suranne Jones, Sammy Winward, JESSIE WALLACE and Hollyoaks' ELIZE DU TOIT all enjoying big storylines.

Soap experts were backing Corrie to walk away with the major prize as best soap following a strong 12 months. The ITV1 show has produced a string of gripping storylines like Tracy wrecking Karen and Steve's wedding.

The shock return of Dirty Den Watts to Albert Square produced a Best Actor nomination for shamed LESLIE GRANTHAM, also up for Villain Of The Year. Charlie Brooks, whose character Janine killed off Barry and is blamed for Laura's death, also had a strong year.

Bookies saw Emmerdale as a threat to the two top soaps following a sensational year. Apart from the New Year's Eve storm that led to the death of Marlon's beloved Tricia Dingle fans have been hooked on the farmyard threesome storyline.

Host O'Grady said: "Since I was in nappies I've been an enthusiastic and appreciative viewer of the great British Soap. And, guess what, I've landed the job ... THE JOB!!! - I'm hosting the Soap Awards, fabulous. Let the dog see the rabbit!"

Presenters included RACHEL HUNTER, LESLIE PHILLIPS, FERN BRITTON and PHILLIP SCHOFIELD.

Last year, telly villain BRIAN CAPRON - who played killer Richard Hillman - helped Corrie murder the opposition when the show swept the board.

Viewers will be able to see this year's ceremony on Wednesday night on ITV1.
