Zine said he has become upset with the pressure he received from the mayor about the need for a sales-tax increase to hire more police officers, only to see Hahn say this week he has found money in next year's budget to hire more than 300 extra officers. ``I have never received such pressure on one issue,'' Zine said. ``I was told there is no way we can hire more officers without that tax. Now, the mayor has a plan to hire new officers without a tax. It's like a magic trick and I'm not sure what to believe any more.'' Zine was one of six City Council members whose vote against the tax measure kept it from getting on the May 17 ballot - a move that drew a sharp rebuke from Hahn after the vote two weeks ago. ``The mayor was urging the recall of council members and was critical of us,'' Zine said. ``I didn't think it was right then, and now he's found a way to hire more cops. I'm not sure what to tell people.'' Zine said he was not pulling his endorsement of the mayor yet, but that he might. ``What I'm telling people now is that I have endorsed him but they should vote their conscience,'' Zine said. ``I'm close to (former Assembly Speaker Bob) Hertzberg and he's been calling me lately. I'm not sure what I'll do.'' Hahn campaign consultant Kam Kuwata said they never considered Zine a strong or major supporter. ``The mayor is doing all he can to get more officers hired,'' Kuwata said. ``I guess Zine doesn't want to do that. I'm not sure anyone cares what he says about this race.''
