 ZILA, INC., CHOSEN FOR 'THE INC. 100,'
 AMERICA'S FASTEST-GROWING SMALL PUBLIC COMPANIES
 PHOENIX, May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Inc. magazine has named Zila, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZILA), to the 13th annual "Inc. 100," the elite list of the nation's fastest growing public companies. The list appears in the May issue, circulation 640,000.
 Some 2,500 firms qualified for consideration, the final 100 were selected based on compound annual growth rate in total revenues or net sales from fiscal year 1987 to fiscal year 1992. Inc. researchers reviewed annual reports for all 2,500 companies and interviewed CEOs and CFOs of several hundred finalists. Inc. characterizes its 100 as dynamic and opportunistic agents of change, filled with entrepreneurial vigor.
 Even by the rigorous standards of Inc. magazine's screening process, Zila stands out:
 -- The average "Inc. 100" company had sales of $84 million, 896
 employees, and productivity (sales per employee) of $94,000 ;
 Zila, with FY 91 sales of nearly $4 million and 12 employees,
 boasted a productivity rate of $332,000.
 -- Zila made the list with the second smallest number of
 employees.
 -- Zila earned its first appearance (rank no. 77) on the
 prestigious "Inc. 100" list with a compound annual sales
 growth rate of 88 percent.
 -- Zila ranked 17 among the "Inc. 100" based on its 129 percent
 stock price rise from March '90 to March '91.
 According to Zila President Joseph Hines: "Zila has grown rapidly with a clean balance sheet -- no long term debt other than the mortgage on our headquarters building. We are presently launching two new products, PeriGel toothpaste and DermaFlex topical anesthetic gel coating; pursuing FDA clearance to market Orascan, a unique oral lesion detection device; and continuing to penetrate new markets with our effective mouth sore products, Zilactin, ZilaDent and Zilactol.
 "We believe Zila is now positioned to accelerate its growth at a higher rate than ever before," added Hines. "Our strategy includes the acquisition of new technologies, the introduction of new products, vigorous new marketing programs and continued close cooperation with the medical research community."
