ZIFF-DAVIS FINALIZES CHANGES; NEW PUBS FROM ZD JOURNALS & ZD EDUCATION.

) confirms that it is currently in discussion regarding the sale of ZD Events, its last major corporate unit. The company expects to complete the sale in the second quarter of 2000. Previously, Ziff-Davis sold its Marketing Intelligence unit for $106 million, its equity interest in ZDTV ZDTV Ziff Davis Television  for $205 million, its ZD Education unit for $172 million and Ziff-Davis Publishing for $780 million.

Ziff-Davis said its plans to use some proceeds from the deals to eliminate its debt. The rest will be distributed to Ziff-Davis stockholders as a dividend. The company expects the dividend, about $5 per share, to be paid in the second quarter of this year. Following the dividend, Ziff-Davis plans to eliminate its tracking stock structure to create a stand-alone Internet company, ZDNet, Inc.   • Computer Shopper (UK magazine) - a home computer magazine published in the United Kingdom
  • Computer Shopper (US magazine) - a home computer magazine published in the United States

 magazine, will be transfered to ZDNet. Softbank Corp., currently the holder of approximately 70% of Ziff-Davis stock, will continue to be largest stockholder of ZDNet with about 45% of the company's outstanding shares.

In related news, ZD Education has begun the publication of Inside Web Development, a new monthly subscription journal that carries no advertising. Taglined "the premier Internet developer's resource," the publication is targeted to Webmasters and related professionals involved in developing and maintaining company Web sites. Editorial for the publication includes information on such topics as Web design, using XHTML (EXtensible HTML) A markup language for Web pages from the W3C. XHTML combines HTML and XML into a single format (HTML 4.0 and XML 1.0). Like XML, XHTML can be extended with proprietary tags. Also like XML, XHTML must be coded more rigorously than HTML.  and JavaScript programming, learning how to apply "regular expressions," reducing site maintenance, logos, photos, layout templates, and determining alternatives to Unisys' GIF GIF

Also, ZD Journals has launched good authority.org, a news portal that offers a daily roundup of headlines gathered from news sources on the Web. The portal will include news on such topics as technology, the Internet as well as sports and entertainment. The unit has also started ZD eJournals, an online library of technology journals. Users have access to over 5000 ZD Journals articles and can purchase single articles, single issues or electronic subscriptions to any ZD Journal title.
