Zevalin Pharmacologic class: Monoclonal antibody Therapeutic class: Antineoplastic Pregnancy risk category D ), a CD20-directed radiotherapeutic antibody, in the Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System, based on the Average Sales Price (ASP) methodology applicable to other injectable drugs and biologicals. This reimbursement methodology will go in to effect January 1, 2010. "We are pleased with the CMS policy ruling, as it represents an important milestone toward establishing a consistent reimbursement standard for ZEVALIN," said Rajesh C. Shrotriya, MD, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and President of Spectrum Pharmaceuticals. "We believe that securing ASP methodology for ZEVALIN removes a significant historical barrier to its use. This ASP methodology has until now been widely used for injectable chemotherapy drugs and as such, there is high familiarity with this reimbursement standard." About ZEVALIN([R]) and the ZEVALIN Therapeutic Regimen ZEVALIN (ibritumomab tiuxetan) is indicated for the treatment of patients with previously untreated follicular non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma (NHL), who achieve a partial or complete response to first-line chemotherapy. ZEVALIN is also indicated for the treatment of patients with relapsed or refractory, low-grade or follicular B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. ZEVALIN is a CD20-directed radiotherapeutic antibody administered as part of the ZEVALIN therapeutic regimen. The ZEVALIN therapeutic regimen consists of three components: rituximab, Indium-111 (In-111) radiolabeled ZEVALIN for imaging, and Yttrium-90 (Y-90) radiolabeled ZEVALIN for therapy. The ZEVALIN therapeutic regimen is a form of cancer therapy called radioimmunotherapy. Radioimmunotherapy (RIT RIT, n See therapy, regenerative injection. ) is an innovative form of cancer treatment with a mechanism of action that is different from traditional chemotherapy. RIT builds on the combined effect of a targeted biologic monoclonal antibody monoclonal antibody, an antibody that is mass produced in the laboratory from a single clone and that recognizes only one antigen. Monoclonal antibodies are typically made by fusing a normally short-lived, antibody-producing B cell (see immunity) to a fast-growing augmented with the therapeutic effects of a beta-emitting radioisotope radioisotope: see radioactive isotope. Radioisotope (biology) A radioactive isotope used in studying living systems, such as in the investigation of metabolic processes. . Important ZEVALIN([R]) Safety Information Deaths have occurred within 24 hours of rituximab infusion, an essential component of the ZEVALIN therapeutic regimen. These fatalities were associated with hypoxia hypoxia Condition in which tissues are starved of oxygen. The extreme is anoxia (absence of oxygen). There are four types: hypoxemic, from low blood oxygen content (e.g., in altitude sickness); anemic, from low blood oxygen-carrying capacity (e.g. , pulmonary infiltrates, acute respiratory distress syndrome acute respiratory distress syndrome n.
