Charles Utts has yet to post a victory in the NASCAR NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), organization that sanctions American stock-car races, est. 1948. It held its first race in Daytona Beach, Fla.  Super Late Model division at Irwindale Speedway Irwindale Speedway is a motorsports facility located in Irwindale, California.  in Saturday night's 75-lap race at Irwindale, Utts passed Sean Woodside of Saugus and took over the lead.

But given the choice, the Camarillo driver said he would rather not be out front right now.

``I don't like being in the points lead,'' Utts said. ``I just want to win races. It's been kind of a curse. Anybody who's had it has had problems.''

The latest victim was Woodside, a regular on the NASCAR Winston West Series who posted a 15th-place finish Saturday.

Nathan Wulff of Escondido, driver of the Free Builder Supply Chevy, won the race, run in a light drizzle that started coming down about halfway through the race. It was Wulff's second victory of the season.

Utts, who said he likes to drive the low line on the half-mile speedway, found his favorite path getting more and more slick as the race went on.

``I got up to third after a restart,'' said Utts, driver of the Lucas Oil Chevy Monte Carlo. ``And the bottom of the track was getting slippery. At that point I thought third place doesn't look so bad.''

Utts said he sometimes catches grief for racing the 1995 Chevy that he has, one of the older cars in his division. But it is one of the last cars NASCAR Winston Cup driver Ron Hornaday Jr. built before moving to North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States.  to start his Craftsman Truck Series career. So far this season, the old Hornaday Chevy has proven a contender.

This is the second time this season Utts has held the points lead. After Saturday night's race, 42 points separate the top five drivers. Utts holds a 14-point lead over Wulff.

``These are the best drivers,'' Utts said. ``We get 30 to 50 cars a night. You don't get that anywhere else. I try not to get too self-pumped up about this. I have my homework to do.''

Wulff, Super Late Model rookie, said he wouldn't want this season to play any differently than it has.

``I hate to win anything that is easy,'' Wulff said. ``We have a different winner almost every race. I think that's excellent.''

The Super Late Models will be back at Irwindale on Saturday night. In addition, NASCAR Grand American Modifieds, American Race Trucks and the MSRA MSRA Microsoft Research Asia
