 ZDS TO OFFER PEN UPGRADE FOR Z-NOTE SERIES;
 TECHNOLOGY TO BE DEMONSTRATED AT PC EXPO
 NEW YORK, June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Zenith Data Systems, a Bull company, today announced its intention to offer a pen-capable display upgrade for its award-winning Z-NOTE series of notebook PCs, and that the company will be demonstrating the upgrade technology here at PC Expo.
 "Interest in pen-based systems is growing, and our technology demonstration here at PC Expo will give us an additional opportunity to learn our customers' requirements," said Enrico Pesatori, ZDS president and chief executive officer.
 "As the market for 'pen-tops' begins to take off at year-end, we expect to have our customer-driven solution ready for the Z-NOTE -- a solution that expands on our concept of Investment Protection," he said.
 The five models in the Z-NOTE series are part of ZDS' new Advanced Professional Products line, which is based on the four guiding principles of the company's long-term product strategy: Investment Protection, Integrated Connectivity, Ease of Use, and Design & Ergonomics.
 Pesatori explained how the four principles apply to ZDS' plans for a pen-capable Z-NOTE upgrade:
 -- Investment Protection. "Users who are postponing a notebook purchase because they believe a pen-top system makes more sense can stop waiting," Pesatori said.
 "All five models in the Z-NOTE series can be utilized like a conventional high-performance notebook now, and can be upgraded for pen-entry whenever the user is ready," he said.
 ZDS expects the pen-capable display upgrade to cost between $500 and $1,000 when it becomes available (not including installation charges by an approved service center), tentatively scheduled for the fourth quarter.
 "This is a highly cost-effective solution, and just the first example of how we'll continue to add value to the Z-NOTE series by expanding the concept of Investment Protection," Pesatori said.
 -- Integrated Connectivity. Four of the five Z-NOTE models are the first PC-compatible notebook PCs, with built-in Ethernet-compatible hardware and software.
 "This makes the Z-NOTE ideal for pen-based applications because it streamlines what can be a frustrating process: taking data from the field and transferring it to a primary system elsewhere," Pesatori said.
 -- Ease of Use. When an approved service center installs a pen- capable monochrome LCD on a Z-NOTE, service technicians also will load Microsoft's Windows for Pen Computing operating system on the system's hard drive.
 "And, of course, for certain applications, pen-based systems are intrinsically easier to use," Pesatori said.
 He said the pen-based upgrade is not expected to significantly affect the size, weight or battery performance of the Intel386 SL-based notebooks.
 -- Design & Ergonomics. As currently planned, the pen-capable display for the Z-NOTE will remain attached to the Z-NOTE through a cable -- but the display itself can be detached from the computer and used flat on a table or in the user's lap.
 "Unlike most pen-tops, the display can be used in almost any position. It's a very 'human' approach to pen-based computing," Pesatori said.
