The former travel agent was arrested in October 1994 on suspicion of murdering 42-year-old Benita Mikailian, a rival travel agent in Glendale. He spent more than a year in jail before he was acquitted by a Pasadena Superior Court jury in December.

Prosecutors had claimed Zakarian shot Mikailian after robbing her of 80 airline tickets, which he needed for some 80 clients who were stranded in Paris en route to the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America.
