Youth Programs: Promoting Quality Services.

Many leaders believe that they are in the business of organizing activities, programs and events for youth. This is not the case. Rather, the leader is in the business of creating an atmosphere or environment for youth that sets the stage for them to develop themselves, including increasing their self-esteem self-esteem

Youth Programs: Promoting Quality Services, by Susan R. and Christopher Edginton, should be useful to a broad spectrum of youth workers, particularly those in the early stages of a career or those just taking up program directorship. The authors take many lessons for the camp field in supporting material and sample form development. Each chapter has a review section following it, making it ideal as a self-study text. Anyone who learns well from graphics and check lists will enjoy this book.

The book is divided into three parts. The first section deals with the philosophy of developing quality programs and providing customer service.

The second discusses trends and issues facing today's youth, the stages of development of designated age groups, and the developmental growth needs for each group. This material, absolutely critical for anyone designing youth programs, is presented in an easily digestible digestible

. The four chapters in this section make this a valuable reference book for any youth agency's library.

The third section offers seven chapters on planning and implementing programs, which contain good basic information, including ideas for handling customer complaints, youth behavior management behavior management Psychology Any nonpharmacologic maneuver–eg contingency reinforcement–that is intended to correct behavioral problems in a child with a mental disorder–eg, ADHD. The biggest disappointment of this section is the program evaluation Program evaluation is a formalized approach to studying and assessing projects, policies and program and determining if they 'work'. The appendixes contain program forms and a sample weekly program grid for a day camp.

Taken as a whole this text offers, in one volume, outlines and checklists of nearly everything a youth program developer should consider when designing programs.
