Young house. For the last eight years the AR Awards for Emerging Architecture have consistently attracted hundreds of entries from architects and designers below the age of 45.* In 2006, 462 entries were received from 53 countries. Within this varied array, that ranged in scale and complexity from furniture and products to significant large buildings such as an airport, the most well represented building type was the private house. Four of these were selected as part of the awards exhibition and featured in the awards issue (AR December 2006); 76 others remain unseen. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] This selection of 17 is a cross section of these unseen entries, with each project located in a different country. Seen together it not only demonstrates the breadth of the AR Awards, which recognise emerging talent and ideas that look beyond image, trend or style. It also acts in microcosm mi·cro·cosm n. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Two primary decisions were made at the outset: to place the house on the highest part of the site and to consolidate and level the ground with retaining walls. Set within a context dominated by houses built in the colonial style, the house comprises three elements: an orange plinth set against the party wall that contains service areas, ground floor circulation, garages and a shaded entrance patio; the white bar raised on slender columns, containing bedrooms; and the double-height folded concrete form containing living rooms that exploit the privileged setting, with views to the local mountain ranges. R. G. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Situated on an edge of city site, this project explores the adaptation of an existing house in the suburbs of Perth. In response to the requirements of a growing family, existing qualities of the home were fundamental to the development of the strategy. Taking the articulation of the existing roofs and ceilings as inspiration, additional spaces have been shaped to bring a new hierarchy to the house as a series of spatial (rather than primarily decorative) events. The new roofs and soffits unfold to allow north sun to penetrate interiors, with a bedroom, study, living room and terrace that more fully engage with the garden. R. G. It has no rigid angles and the mass is elevated on columns, creating open functional spaces, such as a kitchen and living room. The materials are easy to maintain and no artificial lighting is needed during the day. There is a constant shift of movement in this static building. The design is based on a paradox of 'closed houses on open plots'. Many houses open out into narrow margins adjacent to the road, which bylaws The rules and regulations enacted by an association or a corporation to provide a framework for its operation and management. Bylaws may specify the qualifications, rights, and liabilities of membership, and the powers, duties, and grounds for the dissolution of an require. So, windows remain closed, while interiors are air-conditioned with artificial lights inside. This design looks inwards to migrants' traditional 'Pol' houses, yet draws inspiration from the post-independence 'open plot dwelling', exemplified by Le Corbusier's Shodan House in Ahmedabad. It has two blocks, of bedrooms and services, placed longitudinally to create a central void, enclosed by raised compound walls. While the house shuns the road, it draws in nature through windows on the rear concrete walls and sliding doors on the veranda. The plan is based on a square, with internal and external spaces. The central capsule includes a bathroom, kitchen and fireplace. By each entrance there is a net for storing wood which also acts as a screen. Firewood is delivered at the top and taken from the bottom when required. R. G. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] This entirely prefabricated house is characterised by fan-shaped roofs, that increase in pitch as each rises in height. The form not only maximises daylight penetration, opening up expansive views to the south, but also permits a tight organisation in section. With a 9x15m footprint, the domestic spaces sit above the photo-studio which is contained in a concrete basement. Here space is provided to allow for natural and artificial light. The main volume is completed by an annex that contains services and storage. R. G. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Set in Deptford, this gritty grit·ty adj. grit·ti·er, grit·ti·est 1. The ambition was to achieve a modern building that was also anchored to its historical context. Adjacent to a garden and a four-storey housing block, the building was kept low to the south with twin courtyards on the east and west. A large east-facing bedroom window overlooks the garden, while the west studio courtyard animates the elevation towards the High Street. A covered carriageway carriageway Noun 1. Emerging from the hillside, the house is entered at low level. Visitors rise to an upper level living room. A suite of four bedrooms separates this space from the kitchen and dining room that are reached via a glazed veranda. A swimming pool is at the end of the plot. R. G. Raised above the ground by concrete pillars, the house extends over the sloping terrain with interior spaces and terraces filtered from the outer landscape by movable fabric screens stretched along the perimeter. The free composition allows the house to open up as well as close itself while maintaining a sense of tranquillity and connection to nature. Courtyards bring light deep into the plan. R. G.
