AUSTIN, Texas - Oregon's Andy Young climbed five places to finish ninth in the decathlon decathlon (dĭkăth`lŏn), in modern Olympic games, a contest for men held over two days and composed of 10 track-and-field events.  at the Texas Relays The Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays are an annual track and field competition held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas. The University of Texas serves as host for the event, held on either the first or second weekend of April.  on Thursday.

He won the 1,500 meters by nearly 15 seconds over former Oregon standout Santiago Lorenzo, finishing with a time of 4 minutes, 17.34 seconds

Young also finished second in the pole vault, with a mark of 15 feet, 7 inches, was seventh in the javelin (170-6), and 11th in the discus (116-4) and 110 hurdles (15.80).

Texas sophomore Trey Hardee won the event with 7,839 points, followed by teammate Donovan Kilmartin, who finished with 7,650. Lorenzo finished fourth, with 7,493 points.

 wrestling coach Wayne Van Burger will be inducted into the Oregon Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 23. The date was incorrect on Page D4 of Friday's edition.

WILSONVILLE - Former Marshfield High wrestling coach Wayne Van Burger will be inducted into the Oregon Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Van Burger, who retired from Marshfield after this year's state championships, started at the school in 1974 as an assistant coach and became head coach in 1984.

The Pirates won nine Midwestern League titles under Van Burger and finished in the top 10 at the state championships six times, producing nine state champions and 21 runners-up.

Saturday's honors banquet will take place at the Holiday Inn Portland South, 25425 SW 95th Ave. in Wilsonville. A no-host social begins at 5 p.m., and the banquet starts at 6:30. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door for $30.

Others to be inducted on Saturday are former Banks coach Pat Ball, former Neah-Kah-Nie coach Ray Downs, Simon Fraser University Simon Fraser University, main campus at Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada; provincially supported; coeducational; chartered 1963, opened 1965. The Harbour Centre campus in downtown Vancouver opened in 1989.  coach and former St. Helens High standout Mike R. Jones and former Enterprise coach Mel Schuldt.

Reservations due today for awards banquet

The Oregon women's basketball awards banquet has been scheduled for next Thursday at the Eugene Hilton, 66 E. Sixth Ave.

The event is open to the public, but today is the last day to make reservations. Cost is $30 a ticket.

Call 346-5879 for reservations and information.

The banquet begins at 6 p.m. with a social hour. A buffet dinner follows at 7 p.m.

 sets mini-track meet for Saturday at Hayward

The Oregon Track Club will host a free mini-track meet immediately following the Pepsi Team Invitational at Hayward Field on Saturday.

The meet, which is open to kids age 12 and under, is scheduled to begin at 4:45 p.m. Events include the 100, 400, long jump and softball throw.

Interested participants should meet near the Hayward Field scoreboard.

Former Oregon State forward David Lucas will attend a pre-NBA draft men's basketball tournament in Portsmouth, Va., this week.

Lucas hopes to elevate his status for the draft at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament The Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, or "PIT", is the United States' oldest amateur basketball tournament and the only postseason camp conducted for the top NCAA (i.e. college) seniors only. , attended by 64 of the nation's top senior basketball players.

Opening-round games were played Wednesday and Thursday, with the semifinals today and the championship game Saturday.
