California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  came into McArthur Court McArthur Court is a basketball arena located on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene. Also known as "The Pit," it is known as one of the toughest arenas in the country for opposing players to play in. The arena is named for Clifton N.  on Thursday with its talented collection of freshmen, impressive record and the memory of a sweep of UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

What it failed to bring against Oregon, however, was any noticeable amount of energy or intensity. Thus, the Golden Bears were beaten for the just the fourth time this season, falling to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-10 with a 70-41 loss to the Ducks - their 13th straight loss at Mac Court.

"We just were slow today," forward Ashley Walker Ashley Walker was a first class cricketer who played 9 games for Yorkshire County Cricket Club from 1863 to 1870, 10 for Cambridge University from 1864 to 1866 and one match for the North of England in 1870. He also played for the South Wales Cricket Club from 1875-1876.  said. "I mean, I've never seen our team play that bad of defense. We didn't get out on shooters, didn't want to box out, couldn't play post defense. We were just slow right from the get-go."

Even with the loss, Cal is off to its best start since 1992-93 - which was also its last winning season - largely due to four freshman starters who are also the team's top scorers.

Center Devanei Hampton, guards Jene Morris and Alexis Gray-Lawson, and Walker averaged a combined 48.9 points per game prior to Thursday. Against Oregon, they scored 36 points and shot a combined 13-for-42 from the field.

Hampton, who finished with a team-high 15 points, made only 5-of-19 field goals. Walker scored 13 on 4-of-10 shooting. She also had 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double.

"I just have to find my rhythm, and I couldn't find it tonight," Hampton said. "We just lost it. I was having an off night. We've got to learn to play tough on the road, and this was an experience we've got to learn from."

Defensively, the Golden Bears came in allowing a Pac-10-low 54.4 points, but they gave up 70 points for just the second time this season.

"We came out flat tonight and I don't think we guarded," said Joanne Boyle, who in her first year as head coach has already equaled the team's win total from last season. "That's been our strength all year. I think (Oregon) hit some good shots, some tough shots, uncontested shots An uncontested shot is a term used in basketball. It encompasses shots from layups, dunks, and jumpshots. It is any kind of shot, in which the shooter has no one contesting, or interfering with the shot.  and they got the momentum and they carried it throughout the entire game. We put our heads down heads down - [Sun] Concentrating, usually so heavily and for so long that everything outside the focus area is missed. The game was close in the opening minutes before the Ducks' Cicely cicely: see sweet cicely.  Oaks drained a three-pointer at the 14:48 mark to break an 8-8 tie. From there, the Golden Bears missed eight of their next nine shots - many of them open looks in the paint - while Oregon put them in a 23-11 hole.

"We've been down in other games and have had to come back, but not against a team like Oregon," Boyle said. "They are a tournament team and they know how to put teams away. They're very deep and they're very experienced. Being a young team, we didn't have any leadership tonight. We didn't have anybody just step up and say, `We're going to stop this.'

"I think when we missed our first layups and we put our heads down, (Oregon) would come down, and as confident as they were, and hit a three in our face. We go back down and miss a layup and it just got worse and worse and worse. That's the difference between an experienced and very good team, and a team that probably is young. But at the same time, I think we quit."

The result being Cal's worst loss of the season.

"We've got to pick each other up and try and split (this road trip)," Hampton said. "I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)
