You say potato, I say ...

After Rudy Perez was killed while attempting to rob a man at gunpoint, his girlfriend, Elena Granada, indicated that he was "a decent person who wanted a family of his own," reported KSAT.com. She said, "Everybody is going to miss him. He worked hard for what he wanted."

The man to whom she ascribes such sentiments is a known gang member who, at the time of the robbery, was on probation for a home invasion. He was killed when he and two companions attempted to rob Jino Velasquez, right alter Velasquez arrived at his San Antonio home from work at 3 a.m. on March 19.

Velasquez saw the three robbers pull up in a car. When Perez walked toward him, wearing a bandanna that covered his face and carrying a gun, Velasquez drew the gun he normally carries for his work as a security guard, and he opened fire. The robbers managed to flee the scene, but two of them were hit.

When the robbers sought treatment at a local hospital, Perez was pronounced dead. The others were arrested. The wounded robber was treated for a gunshot wound to his thigh. Police said the men admitted to involvement in the robbery.
