The poor UK harvest is coupled with a dip in yields across northern Europe. BOPA chairman Tim Wigram said that all prices had gone up as a result of reduced supplies. The price of onions being sold to supermarkets is up around 60 per cent, while those sold to food processors and wholesalers have roughly doubled. Wigram said: "The saleable sale·a·ble adj. "I don't think we are going to run out but the quality isn't as good as past seasons." UK onions are stored after the harvest for sale throughout the rest of the year. |
