Yonkers library receives environmental award.Mayor Philip A. Amicone announced that the National Brownfield See greenfield. Association has named the Larkin Center, home of the Riverfront riv·er·front n. The land or property along a river. Library and Yonkers Board of Education, as a 2004 Phoenix Award recipient in the Federal Environment Agency, Region 2. The award will be presented during Brownfield's 2004 conference in St. Louis on September 21. Created in 1977, this prestigious award honors individuals and groups who are working to solve the critical environmental challenge of transforming abandoned industrial areas into productive new uses. "This was the first major development in downtown Yonkers and was the spark that ignited ig·nite v. ig·nit·ed, ig·nit·ing, ig·nites v.tr. 1. a. To cause to burn. b. To set fire to. 2. To subject to great heat, especially to make luminous by heat. the renaissance of what downtown Yonkers is currently experiencing," said Mayor Amicone. "The Phoenix Award is the academy award in redevelopment and I will be honored to accept it on behalf of the citizens of this great city." A former Otis elevator manufacturing facility in downtown Yonkers remained abandoned for almost a quarter century. The building was purchased by the City of Yonkers in 1995 from Port Authority NY/NJ NY/NJ New York/New Jersey . The City of Yonkers sold the site to the Yonkers Industrial Development Agency in 1999. The YIDA brought in the National Development Council, a national not-for-profit 501c3, to raise the capital and redevelop re·de·vel·op v. re·de·vel·oped, re·de·vel·op·ing, re·de·vel·ops v.tr. 1. To develop (something) again. 2. the facility. The $53 million project was completed ahead of time and under budget. It is now the home of Yonkers Public Library and Yonkers Board of Education. The building has received a number of awards and recognitions. The 2004 Phoenix Award winners represent outstanding Brownfield projects from each of the 10 US Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and regions and the international community. |
