How sad it is to be writing of the perfect summer album as fall begins to turn the green leaves yellow, red, and gold; sadder still it is to realize that by the time this review is published, winter will be here and the summer sun will be a distant memory at best for the vast majority of those reading this.  of this review does not diminish the timeliness of this CD, which captures the paradox of summer, when it is so bright that at times you just can't see, when the mornings come so early that you can't get of bed until late, when there is so much motion that everything seems to be standing still.

For the most part, this is one of those albums that seems to draw upon dim memories of music from the past. Yo La Tengo are masters of mood, knowing just how to evoke e·voke

 smiles and sighs by strumming chords that sound like music you have been carrying around in the back of your mind since the '60s. Because none of the singers has a particularly good voice, you feel free to hum and sing right along, or to have a whack whack - According to arch-hacker James Gosling, to "...modify a program with no idea whatsoever how it works." (See whacker.) It is actually possible to do this in nontrivial circumstances if the change is small and well-defined and you are very good at glarking things from context.  at your imaginary Imaginary can refer to:

When you get right down to it, Summer Sun is a kind of guilty pleasure. Aging boomers can put it on as they drive along in their luxury cars and pretend that they are playing in the rock band that they never had the talent to join. Very therapeutic!
