Year 2000 Wire/Autodesk Products Year 2000 Compliant; Test Results Posted, Users Communicate Through Discussion Group on Web Site.SAN RAFAEL San Rafael (săn rəfĕl`), residential city (1990 pop. 48,404), seat of Marin co., W Calif., a suburb of San Francisco on the northern shore of San Francisco Bay; inc. 1913. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 23, l997--Autodesk today announced that most of its products, including its flagship AutoCAD(R) Release 14 design software, have completed extensive testing and have been found to accurately show and process dates beyond the Year 2000. Autodesk is one of the few design software companies to test and publish their products' Year 2000 compliance results. The company has posted product testing results on the company's Web site home page at www.autodesk.com or directly at www.autodesk.com/year2000 . The Web page also provides a discussion group that lets Autodesk personnel and Autodesk product users exchange information pertinent to the year 2000 situation. The Year 2000 issue, which could cause confusing century date change problems for all types of software product users, results from the early days of commercial computing, when programmers and database administrators specified dates to be saved in a compact form using two digits each to represent the month, day and year. One common form is "YYMMDD YYMMDD (2-Digit) Year, Month, and Day ," where July 2, 1954 would be expressed as "540702." This usage saved two digits per date when some mainframes had only 64K bytes of main memory, and disks stored only five or ten megabytes. At the time, this logic seemed reasonable, because the year 2000 was far in the future, and the developers believed the programs being created then would be replaced long before that time. Unfortunately, as the years passed, many programs and databases continued to be designed with this old two-digit format. For Year 2000 compliance, Autodesk products rely on the date conversions and calculations, file date/time stamps and stored date formats provided by the host operating system operating system (OS) Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs. .
