When asked why they use generic products (multiple answers allowed), 75% cited the reduction of the burden on patients, followed by reduction in drug price (48.8%), reduction in medical expenses (34.3%) and increase in revenue (28.5%).

As for criteria in selecting generic products (multiple answers allowed), in addition to the reduction of the burden on patients (65.9%), 65.1% mentioned stability, followed by bioequivalence bioequivalence /bio·equiv·a·lence/ (-e-kwiv´ah-lens) the relationship between two preparations of the same drug in the same dosage form that have a similar bioavailability.  (48.2%), contribution to hospital management (42.2%), use at other institutions (41.7%) and uniformity in indications (41.1%).

The top five manufacturers of generic drugs that are used by the respondents are Sawai Pharmaceutical (43.6%), Towa Pharmaceutical (30.1%), Nichi-Iko Pharmaceutical (29.5%), Merck Hoei (28.3%), and Taiyo Yakuhin (22.5%).

The report, available only in Japanese, sells for 735,000 yen ($6,620).
