In addition to her full-time job, Connell has distinguished herself through community service, Snyder said. For the past nine years, Connell has served as a reserve deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Search and Rescue Team, participating in more than 280 rescues during that time. She earned the rank of lieutenant in 1998 by the vote of her peers and she has 15 direct reports, with personal responsibility for their safety during search and rescue operations. Connell is on call for the Sheriff's Department 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and she usually works about 30 hours a month on assignments. Despite all these activities and responsibilities, her salary for public service is $1 per year. ``I do this because, if one day my children were lost or in trouble, I would want someone out there to help me find them,'' Connell said. Connell has three sons: Paul, 19; Mike, 17; and Nick, 15.
