rinks' grand opening to league play.

``We've been waiting a long time for this grand opening,'' said Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford after dropping the first hockey puck. ``We have so many kids with so many interests. We wanted to provide for these interests.''

The 160 children are broken down into 10 teams in three different age groups - 6-8, 9-11 and 12-14. They will hold practice weekly and play league games on Saturdays.

Each participant is charged $37 and provided with a uniform, and team and player photos. Each will receive a trophy at the end of the 10-game season. Goalie gear is also provided, officials said.

``We made it as affordable as we could,'' said Steve Gfellers, recreation coordinator for the city of Palmdale Parks and Recreation Department. ``People have been crying out to come out here.''

Although officials were very happy with the interest in their initial league, they are expecting more teams to be added over the next few seasons.

``Once it gets going it will attract a lot more people,'' said Gfellers.

While the youth league began Saturday, officials said the adult league began last week with eight teams that will also play a 10-game season.

Since the rinks opened in July 1996, parks and recreation officials have been preparing youths for league play by offering hockey clinics Noun 1. hockey clinic - a meeting at which hockey players receive special evaluation and instruction
