FROM TINY ACORNS ... : Thousand Oaks residents should be happy. The oak was nominated as America's National Tree in a nationwide vote on the National Arbor Day Foundation's Web site. Placing just behind the oak were the redwood, dogwood dogwood or cornel (kôr`nəl), shrub or tree of the genus Cornus, chiefly of north temperate and tropical mountain regions, characteristically having an inconspicuous flower surrounded by large, showy bracts which , maple and pine trees.

FAIRY GARDEN: Revel in the roses and learn how to create your own fairy garden this weekend at Descanso Gardens, 1418 Descanso Drive, La Canada Flintridge.

Today and Sunday, visitors can take free guided walks through the five-acre International Rosarium rosarium

At 2 p.m. Sunday, landscape designer Ivy Reid will share her insights into fairy folklore, including which plants are associated with the folk and creative garden design. Among these are a spring bedding plant called lineria, and the upright spikes of flowers such as delphinium delphinium: see larkspur.  and foxglove foxglove: see figwort.

. The class fee is $13 and registration is required by calling (818) 952-4401 or going to the Web site at www.DescansoGardens.org.

Descanso Gardens is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, $1 for ages 5-12, free to children 4 and younger. Tram tours are an additional $2. Parking is free.
