TIP-TOE THROUGH THE GARDENS: Area gardeners will clear a path to their oases on Sunday for the Westlake Village Garden Club's 28th annual Garden and Patio tour and the Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  Republican Women's garden tour.

The Westlake Village tour will take visitors to four outstanding gardens and patios in the Westlake/Thousand Oaks neighborhood. These gardens display exotic flowers from around the world, fountains, and bird and butterfly habitats. Hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m.; tickets are $10 and can be purchased at several area stores and at each garden on the day of the tour. The Simi Valley tour will take visitors to six gardens in Simi Valley and Wood Ranch with a variety of flowers and landscaping techniques. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; tickets are $10 through the club. For more information, call (805) 526-7566.

. There are 12 Los Angeles gardens participating; an admission fee of $5 for each garden can be paid on the tour day at each location. An added bonus is a tour of the mayor's residence for $10, but space is limited. The Allumbaugh garden is a good place to start your day, as volunteers will have directions to the other gardens available. If you're planning to travel this summer and want to visit private gardens elsewhere, consider buying the Open Days Directory that lists 372 gardens open between now and October. The directory is $15.95 ($10.95 for Conservancy members), plus $4.50 for shipping. Discount coupon books are also available for the tours.
