HISTORY IN THE MAKING: Everything old is new again. And popular. For those trying to integrate elements from the past into their current homes, there's ``Details: How to Design With Architectural Salvage and Antiques'' (Gibbs, Smith; $21.95).

The new book, written by Brian Coleman Brian Coleman (born 25 June 1961) is a Conservative Party politician and member of the London Assembly for Barnet and Camden, England. He is a Councillor in the London Borough of Barnet. , a practicing psychiatrist in Seattle, takes a look at how salvaged items can enhance a home built in any era. Coleman examines everything from lighting to doors, mantels, sinks and stained glass stained glass, in general, windows made of colored glass. To a large extent, the name is a misnomer, for staining is only one of the methods of coloring employed, and the best medieval glass made little use of it. .

VINTAGE STATE OF MIND: London-based designer Cath Kidston Cath Kidston Ltd. is a company selling the designs of Cath Kidston who is Creative Director. It is best known for its textile prints but also sells a wide range of items for the home and also for children. The first store opened in 1992 in Notting Hill, London.  (who also has a shop in Brentwood) has a penchant for old-fashioned prints. So much so that she decided to write a book about it.

``Cath Kidston's In Print'' (Chronicle; $24.95) offers more than 60 do-it-yourself household projects that make use of vintage fabrics. All require very little fabric (in some cases, just scraps) and little to no sewing skills.

There are ideas on how to create a variety of treasures for the home -- from seat cushions, to laundry bags, placemats and wall hangings.

She even offers a tip on creating a stylish doorstop doorstop - Used to describe equipment that is non-functional and halfway expected to remain so, especially obsolete equipment kept around for political reasons or ostensibly as a backup. STITCH IN TIME "Stitch in Time" is an episode of The Outer Limits. It first aired on 14 January 1996, and was the first episode of the second season. Amanda Plummer won an Emmy for her appearance in this episode. : Quick, clever and elegant projects are the hallmark of ``The Impatient Embroiderer: 20 Great Projects You Can Make in a Hurry'' (Potter Craft; $22.95).

The book, written by textile designer Jane Emerson, offers ideas for those short on time who are at a variety of skill levels.

Beautifully illustrated, easy-to-follow instructions can help embroiderers dress up their homes with embroidery on everything from pillows to lamp shades.
