BUNGALOW BEAT: Gain insights into Arts & Crafts style with ``Along Bungalow Lines: Creating an Arts & Crafts Home'' (Gibbs Smith; $39.95) by designer Paul Duchscherer and architectural photographer Linda Svendsen.

With gorgeous photos and easy-to-understand descriptions, the book explains the creative process of ordinary homeowners as well as famous architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright. The book details tasks ranging from what colors they used to how they restored old cabinets for vintage effect.

Each chapter features an offering from a different era and includes interior and exterior photos of historic houses nationwide. They also include basic design lessons. Featured chapters include ``In the Craftsman Taste,'' ``Prairie Evolution'' and ``British Ancestry.''

The introduction also includes a historical overview of the Arts & Crafts movement, with sample floor plans of historical homes.

DESIGN ALERT: Other than the L.A. Marathon, there may be only one other time of year when Angelenos voluntarily take to the streets without their cars.

It's West Hollywood's annual Art & Design Walk, which takes place today from 4 to 9 p.m. Now in its ninth year, the event, staged along Melrose Avenue and Robertson and Beverly boulevards, gives design-savvy consumers a chance to stroll through more than 300 fashion boutiques, design showrooms, and fine art and antiques galleries, all of which remain open late. The event features special receptions, seminars and demonstrations, as well as food and entertainment hosted by individual showrooms, including some not usually open to the public.

To help those who must drive to get there, West Hollywood metered parking won't be enforced on those streets during the event.
