FLOWER OF THE WEEK

NAME: Sibirica iris

ATTRIBUTES: A prolific blooming iris that is very easy to grow and a great perennial for beginning gardeners. The dramatic, swordlike foliage remains all summer and turns golden yellow in the fall.

BLOOM TIME: Late spring or early summer; anywhere from mid-May to mid-June.

CULTURE: Plant from containers anytime the ground is workable. Bare-root plants are best transplanted in early spring or early fall. Siberian iris prefer moist to wet soil but will do just fine in average clay soil. They bloom most heavily in full sun but will also thrive and bloom well in half-day shade. They are easily divided in spring or fall to expand your plantings.

COST: Buy plants now while in bloom to select your favorite flower colors. Price range is $7 per gallon for standard varieties, $15 and up for newer, unique hybrids.
