It's a tradition for many of us to begin our holiday shopping on the day after Thanksgiving. So you can do the malls, or you can plan to attend the first Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. FLOWERS BY MAIL: Gardeners appreciate high-quality garden catalogs, but might not know which ones carry the plants they prefer. The Mailorder Gardening Association has released an updated version of its booklet, ``Garden Catalog catalog, descriptive list, on cards or in a book, of the contents of a library. Assurbanipal's library at Nineveh was cataloged on shelves of slate. The first known subject catalog was compiled by Callimachus at the Alexandrian Library in the 3d cent. B.C.  Guide.'' It contains descriptions and contact information for more than 125 garden catalog companies. For a copy, send a $2 check to Mailorder Gardening Association, Dept. SC-31, P.O. PATCHES OF SAND: Hearts, flowers and other themes from America's heartland are usually associated with patchwork quilts, but today and Sunday quilters are going to the beach for inspiration. More than 300 quilters will exhibit their interpretations of ``By the Beautiful Sea'' for the competition at the Camarillo Quilters Association's annual ``Quilting quilting, form of needlework, almost always created by women, most of them anonymous, in which two layers of fabric on either side of an interlining (batting) are sewn together, usually with a pattern of back or running (quilting) stitches that hold the layers  by the Sea'' show that includes a quilting bee, quilting demonstrations and quilts for sale. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in the agriculture building at Seaside Seaside.
