YOUR GUIDE TO ATHENS READY TO REPRESENT IN ATHENS VALLEY ATHLETES ARE ON A MISSION FOR MEDALS.


If the Valley had entered its own Olympic team at the 2000 Sydney Games, it would have finished 17th with 15 medals, including 10 gold. When considering 80 countries won medals at those Games, that feat is even more impressive.

 officially begin Friday in Greece, the Valley figures to contribute heavily to the success of the U.S. team.

Five of the seven Valley athletes who earned medals in 2000 are back in 2004:

--Crystl Bustos (Canyon Country) is the Americans' main power threat as they defend their softball gold medal gold medal

--Marion Jones (Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  High) will not repeat her five-medal performance of 2000, but she is favored to win the women's long jump and could earn another medal if she's selected to the U.S. 400-meter relay team.

--Lenny Krayzelburg (Studio City) will battle a painful shoulder injury in the men's 100 backstroke after winning three golds in 2000.

--Maurice Greene (Chatsworth), who won two gold medals in 2000, is favored in the men's 100 meters and could win another medal in the 400 relay.

--John Godina (Northridge) is expected to improve on the bronze medal he won in the shot in Sydney.

And the Valley also can expect strong performances from first-time Olympians.

Bob and Mike Bryan Twin brothers Robert Charles Bryan (Bob) and Michael Carl Bryan (Mike) are American professional tennis players. Between 2005 and 2006, they reached an Open Era record of seven consecutive Grand Slam finals.  (Camarillo) are ranked No. 1 in the world in tennis doubles, Allyson Felix Allyson Felix (born November 18, 1985 in Los Angeles, California) is a track and field sprint athlete, competing internationally for the United States in the 200 meters. Felix, born and raised in southern California, is also a devout Christian and is the daughter of an ordained  (Santa Clarita/L.A. Baptist of North Hills) is favored to medal in the women's 100 meters, Jessica Mendoza (Camarillo) will start for the women's softball team expected to win gold, and Lashinda Demus (Palmdale) is a medal threat in the women's 400 meters and will likely compete on the U.S. 1,600 relay team expected to win gold.

 or Pepperdine made U.S. Olympic rosters. And there are another 31 athletes from USC and UCLA who are competing for foreign countries, led by the Trojans' Felix Sanchez, the gold-medal favorite from the Dominican Republic in the men's 400-meter hurdles.
