LANCASTER Lancaster, city, England
Lancaster (lăng`kəstər), city (1991 pop. 43,902) and district, county seat of Lancashire, NW England, on the Lune River.
 - A large supply of seniors made up for a lack of varsity experience a year ago. Having so many seniors also meant the Lancaster boys' soccer team would again have few returning varsity players this season.

But this time the Eagles must rely on younger players, leaving Lancaster's spot among the Golden League elite in question.

``It's going pretty well, but we're young,'' Eagles coach Walter Schultz said. ``I'd say next year we should be really good; this is a rebuilding year. We're competitive, but Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill didn't lose as many players, and Littlerock, last year was their rebuilding year.''

Of course Schultz originally called last season a rebuilding one for his team. The Eagles had just one starter back and only six players returning from the previous season's team, which advanced to the Southern Section quarterfinals. However, Lancaster went on to repeat as the Golden League's second-place team.

Again, the Eagles have only six returning players. But instead of filling the gaps with 12 seniors as they did last time, there are only four seniors this year.

``Our biggest weakness is we're young,'' Schultz said.

Almost all of the 18 players on Lancaster's roster have club experience, but few have previously played together. The team's chemistry has been a pleasant surprise for Schultz.

``They're starting to play as a team,'' he said. ``They get along, which is unusual. A lot of times when you have a lot of good players, some of them want to be the star and do their own thing. Not any one of them wants to be the star, they're just out there to win.''

And the Eagles have been winning. They are 6-2 and reached the semifinals of the Eagles Classic, which they hosted last weekend. Lancaster played to a 1-1 tie against Littlerock, but the eventual tournament-champion Lobos won on penalty kicks.

the Eagles to build for next season and beyond. A strong junior-varsity program only brightens Schultz's vision of the future.

``Two or three years down the line we'll have some really good teams,''Schultz said. ``But this year we're rebuilding.''
