YOU WANT MOVIES? WE'VE GOT MOVIES.

Byline: - Bob Strauss

Like Hollywood does most years, the movie industry is starting out 2004 with the battle cry of Everything Old Is New Again.

But since this didn't work out so well in 2003 - for every ``Freaky freak·y

2. Slang Frightening.

Friday'' or ``Cheaper by the Dozen'' hit remake, there were two or three ``Matrix,'' ``Charlie's Angels'' or ``Dumb and Dumber'' sequel disappointments - the studios seem to at least be trying to do the same old things in a new way this year.

Thus the latest Harry Potter entry, ``The Prisoner of Azkaban,'' boasts a new director, Alfonso Cuaron, with real cinematic vision for a change. Homer's ``Iliad'' gets a high Hollywood gloss in the epic ``Troy,'' with the stud-starring cast of Brad Pitt, Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom. ``The Alamo'' is remembered somewhat differently than John Wayne's old perspective.

Universal dusts off its classic monsters for the modern-style mash ``Van Helsing.'' Not to be outdone out·do
tr.v. out·did , out·done , out·do·ing, out·does
To do more or better than in performance or action. See Synonyms at excel.

. Sir Alec Guinness is reincarnated by Tom Hanks for a ``Ladykillers'' remake. Halle Berry's ``Catwoman'' is up-to-the-minute slinky slink·y
adj. slink·i·er, slink·i·est
1. Stealthy, furtive, and sneaking.

2. Informal Graceful, sinuous, and sleek: wore a slinky outfit to the party.
. Denzel Washington is a reimagined ``Manchurian Candidate.'' Even the ``Cinderella Story'' is turned into a Hilary Duff vehicle before, the studio hopes, the teen queen's extended 15 minutes are up.

And there's ``Spider-Man 2,'' and ``Kill Bill - Vol. 2,'' as well as a litany of tired TV show updates and sequels nobody in their right mind was waiting for. Maybe some surprising original pictures too, but as always, we'll believe it when we see them.

Following is a list of all the movies currently scheduled to open in Los Angeles between now and the beginning of the summer movie season, which on Hollywood's calendar starts May 7. After that, we present a selection of films that could prove noteworthy later in the year. All release dates are subject to change.
