YET ANOTHER SCRATCH: FAVORITE BREAKS LEG.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Daily News Staff Writer

Injuries and illnesses are so common, sometimes it seems every major race is missing an important horse. So up to a point, fans have to forget about who isn't running and enjoy who is.

The Breeders' Cup Classic The Breeders' Cup Classic is a Grade 1 Weight for Age thoroughbred horse race for 3 years old and older run at a distance of 1¼ miles (2012 m) on dirt. It is held annually at a different racetrack in the United States or Canada as part of the Breeders' Cup.  just went beyond that point.

The announcement came less than a week after leading Horse of the Year candidate Gentlemen was sidelined with a virus.

Those withdrawals leave Belmont Stakes Belmont Stakes

winner Touch Gold and eastern star Skip Away Skip Away (born April 4, 1993), a gray thoroughbred race horse, was named America's Champion 3 Year Old Male in 1996 and twice (1997, 1998) named America's Champion Handicap Horse.  as the favorites among eight horses pointing for the Classic, which would match the smallest field in 13 previous runnings of the 1-1/4-mile race.

Dr. Wade Byrd said the 4-year-old son of 1991 Classic winner Black Tie Affair has an ``excellent'' chance to race again after surgery.

Still, the news is crushing for owner John Murphy and trainer Bill Perry. They recently watched Formal Gold beat Skip Away by more than five lengths in the Iselin Handicap at Monmouth Park and the Woodward at Belmont Park to send his earnings for the year over $1 million.

``One minute, I'm happy, convinced he would win the race,'' said Perry, who had returned to his New York New York, state, United States

Exercise rider David Nunn said nothing seemed amiss as Formal Gold galloped 1-3/8 miles Thursday.

``He came off the track great, jogged home, and I said, `They'll never beat this horse, he's that good right now,' '' Nunn said. ``We took him outside, gave him a bath. . . . As soon as we walked him off from the bath, he couldn't walk.''

Also announced Friday: Silver Maiden is out of the Juvenile Fillies because of a virus, letting Bob Baffert-trained Marie J into the field; and Desert King is out of the Turf because of a fever.
